Selecting Baby Skin Care Products

A newborn’s skin is highly sensitive to chemicals and should never be bathed with anBaby antibacterial soap according to many pediatricians. Use a mild soap containing palm, olive or coconut oil. Avoid products that contain mineral oil or petroleum jelly, especially in the diaper area. Such products can be irritants and can also trap moisture against the skin.

Look for herbs such as calendula and marigold as ingredients in baby lotions and oils. The same is true for baby shampoos. It is best to stay away from products containing synthetic fragrances and artificial colors or any preservatives containing parabens that can irritate the skin.

Diaper rash is common in babies but, surprisingly, usually occurs after eight months of age. Avoid powders for your baby that contain talc, which has been linked to cancer, and use scent free powders that contain cornstarch or bentonite clay. These usually are found in health food stores.

It is really best to have frequent diaper changes and fresh air when possible to help in the prevention of diaper rash.
